There used to be more barrier islands and shoals along Pocomoke, many are long gone. You’ll see the famous Smith Island, now known for Smith Island Cakes and Tangier Island in the distance. Both have incredible stories to tell, from their unique dialect, Native American heritage and history of families who have called both islands home for generations. If you’re a reader, I recommend Tom Horton’s book An Island out of Time. There’s a great 25 minute documentary on Smith Island as well.
